Equestrian At Hart Blog Hop: Keep It Clean

In this blog hop Hillary wants to talk about what cleaning products we use on our tack and why?

Like many of us, I love the Higher Standards Leather Care soap. I’m currently using Fox’s Vanilla Lavender, which is my favorite scent of the several I’ve tried.

I do think you have to be careful not to get too much soap on your sponge, but I love how easily it removes the gunk, particularly from my saddle flaps and reins.

That said, I don’t really care for the leather balm. My saddles in particular run dry so it’s not quite enough. Plus I find it really hard to apply, it seems too hard to get much on your sponge or rag (I’ve tried both). I’ve considered putting it in the microwave to see if that helps, but I haven’t done that yet.

So my favorite conditioner, which is truly awesome, is:

Antares Leather Conditioner!

Goes on easy, soaks right in, makes my tack shiny and with the right amount of grip the next time I ride. I’m so glad I got some at Rolex to try. You can already see how much I’ve used it since April!

One last thing I wanted to mention which I haven’t purchased yet but borrowed from someone at the barn to try. Mink oil. My paddock boots were looking crappy, not being very waterproof, and the zippers were hard to use. I cleaned them with higher standards then put mink oil on them. Mink oil is actually not a liquid oil, it’s really an oily cream if I was going to explain it. Not only did my boots look better and become waterproof again, but my zippers are sliding with ease again. The zipper fix was totally unplanned and I didn’t even put the oil on there on purpose, but I’m so glad it helped.

I hope that my review of these items might help push someone to try something new if they aren’t totally satisfied with what they have yet. I’m really glad I tried all of these items even though I have tons of other cleaning and conditioning products sitting around at home.

ooh, might need to try mink oil on my paddock boots too for the same problem: they’re not very water proof these days. thanks for the recommendation!
