Wildlife and pony socks

As you can tell from my last post about Hoary Alyssum, my week wasn’t really that great for riding. Monday was the first day the boys’ legs starting getting big. P was looking ouchy all over pretty much so I just hopped on bareback and took him for a long walk in the grass.

Tuesday I was supposed to have a lesson complete with jumping, but Stampede’s legs were all pretty large. I got on him anyways and did flat, but he was definitely not moving well and had some remaining swelling in his hind legs even after working around so I didn’t jump.

Wednesday I got on P bareback again prepared for a chill ride but he surprised me by wanting to trot around. We did a quick hack and got quite a bit of the swelling out of his legs.

The boys had Thursday off since I had a networking event to go to. I stopped out and took care of them quickly and their legs were really starting to shrink between being off the bad hay for a few days and getting meds.

Friday Jessica came out to ride P with me while I rode Stampede. P was good of course, although maybe not very excited to work in the ring. Stampede was being a bit obnoxious about the “scary corner” but we got through our ride complete with a few lead changes for fun.

After our ride we took the boys out to graze. P happened to pick up a small tree branch and started to eat the leaves. Jessica pulled it away from him and then he became afraid of it, lol.

Yesterday I planned to do a jump school. Got to the barn and got the beast ready. Headed out to the back ring where the jumps are currently set up and the ring was rock hard. So I decided to flat in the field first. Stampede was being obnoxious in the field between snarking at the other horse out there (not one of his friends!) and being scared of one of the hay making tools parked nearby but we kept working along. I probably should have stopped there, but I wanted to jump since there is a show in a week. Let’s just say it was a jump school I’d prefer to forget about! We weren’t on the same page, the ground was hard, and everything was a fight.

Today P and I had a nice flat in the field followed by a quick graze in the shade. Then Stampede got to try on his horse socks (Summer Whinnys). I will have to report back on them after Stampede wears them for a bit, but we got them on and Stampede was clearly excited…

Hoping for some better rides this week followed by a good show!

Thanks! The barn keeps the field trimmed up pretty well, particularly during show season since it’s right behind one of the rings. I’m not sure I could stand to board at a place without a great place to hack in the grass now! The boys love it and there’s always a great view.

Short socks were a fail, rolled into a ball under his ankles. Called the company and they had never heard of that happening. Going to try the full length ones once it stops raining here.
